What the LORD Hates

lord hates-01

Proverbs 6:16-19

Six things the LORD hates; in fact, seven are detestable to Him:

  1. Arrogant eyes
  2. A lying tongue
  3. Hands that shed innocent blood
  4. A heart that plots wicked schemes
  5. Feet eager to run to evil
  6. A lying witness who gives false testimony
  7. One who stirs up trouble among brothers

I find lists like this one found in Scripture are important to memorize – not to quote to someone else in a moment of judgment – but to have on the forefront of my own mind to evaluate my own actions.

Rather than expand on these seven points, let’s commit them to memory together. Read through them a few times and ask the Lord if any of these are present in your life. And if so, ask the Lord and the person you wronged to forgive you.

1. Eyes
2. Tongue
3. Hands
4. Heart
5. Feet
6. Testimony
7. Trouble

My Understanding

Proverbs 3:5-8

I think I just missed my turn. In 5:00 p.m. In Memphis traffic, this realization can ruin your evening. My thirty minute drive home became an hour-long excursion as my GPS said my destination did not exist and my mom reassured me on the phone that if I took a left at the next light I would eventually recognize my surroundings.

The feeling of being on the wrong path is even worse when it involves the way you approach other people. Have you ever realized that you’ve been on the wrong side of an argument? Or that your reaction to a situation was out of line?  Have you ever tried to figure out a riddle only to hear the answer and realize that you were obsessing over the wrong detail?

Have you heard this one before? Mary’s father had five daughters. The first four were named:

Na
Ne
Ni
No

Most likely, what is the name of the fifth daughter?

Just For Fun

“My son, if sinners entice you, don’t be persuaded. If they say – “Come with us! Let’s set an ambush and kill someone. Let’s attack some innocent person just for fun!” … my son, don’t travel with that road with them or set foot on their path, because their feet run toward trouble and they hurry to commit murder.”
– Proverbs 1:10-11, 15

How do your feet respond to different situations? Probably not a question we consider daily. Last week I saw a mother dash across a room when her daughter began to fall down the stairs. Now she had fast feet.

The same two feet that race outside to play also drag across the carpet when asked to clean up. They can skip and hop and then kick and stomp.

So many emotions conveyed and we pay little to no attention to them.

Book Review: Blue Like Jazz

downloadI must confess, I finished this book weeks ago but haven’t been able to form coherent thoughts regarding my opinion of the book and whether or not I would recommend it to other people.

Blue Like Jazz is a mostly autobiographical telling of Donald Miller’s journey to God. Read More

Clothing Myself

I couldn’t decide what to wear this morning. Ever have that problem? It’s 30 degrees outside, so I need to dress warmly. But it’s 70 degrees at my office, so I aim for warm layers. Then again, I have youth group tonight at church so I want to look cute, unless the youth minister decides to play a game, which means I will wish I was dressed practically and had tennis shoes.

Balancing these rambling thoughts proved tricky , especially since I was still anchored in bed under my covers. I ventured into the closet, rummaged through my pile of sweaters, made a decision, and topped it all off with a scarf.

I went about the rest of my morning routine and sang Before the Throne of God Above on my way to work. Read More
