Do Not Awaken Love

Much of my spare time over the past month has been spent reading and studying about relationships in the 21st century and what the Bible says about them. I’ll be honest – it’s been a weird month. For Sunday School material we’ve been teaching the True Love Project which features some very intense stories about sexual intimacy within the confines of marriage. Each week has two videos so I watch at least 30 minutes of someone else teaching the topic.

And then I was tasked with writing a post on Biblical Manhood for a separate writing project. I braved the rickety wooden stairs into the attic to find my high school journal. In it was the list of character traits that I prayed God would be instilling in my future spouse, should He see fit for me to marry one day. That assignment led me down the path of dating a Godly man even further. Then to comply with DCS (Department of Children’s Services) rules, Kevin and I had to take a 3 hour class on fostering children who have been sexually abused. Meanwhile, I read Aziz Ansari’s book Modern Romance (this is NOT a recommendation) about relationships today and why finding the “right” person can be so difficult.

So where have all these thoughts on relationships and physical intimacy led me over the past month? What one verse would I give to sum up my thoughts? It would be this repeating refrain from Song of Solomon:

Young women of Jerusalem, I charge you
by the gazelles and the wild does of the field:
do not stir up or awaken love
until the appropriate time.
Song of Solomon 2:7 and 3:5 (and 8:4 paraphrased)

Book Review: For the Love

On her website, Jen Hatmaker posted a video answering the question, “Who should buy her newest book For the Love?

She responds that the book is for the woman who is doing a terrible job at everything and cannot keep up with expectation. The Woman with deep, meaningful, wonderful community & is celebrating it or the woman who feels lonely in her own life and is craving a deeper community…” Basically, there is something for every woman in every season in life and I could not agree more.
For the Love is my first Jen Hatmaker book to read and I found myself chuckling along with her. It felt like Jen (yes, the style was so conversational, we’re on a first name basis) was just sitting on the couch with me telling stories from her life and what she has learned from them.

Book Review: Connected

Let’s have a moment of confession: I judge books by their covers. Connected may be one of the prettiest books I’ve held in my hand. The cover not only looks like a water painting, the paper feels like one, too. Plus, I love birds, so the birds on the wire make me smile.

Enough about the book cover. Onto the content. Erin Davis tackles the struggle that many Christian women face – loneliness. The book is full of quotes from women who share their own struggles.

God-Breathed in Context

In our Sunday School class for middle school girls, we have been studying how to study the Bible. The Lord has blessed us with two fruitful weeks of study as the girls have learned basic facts about the Bible’s history as well as its physical layout. We’ve practiced using not only our table of contents but also our concordance.

We put our newly learned Bible studying lessons into practice with 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and the Lord taught me a couple awesome facts about the text that I had not previously noticed.

Looking just at 2 Timothy 3:16-17 we asked,

What is the purpose of Scripture?

Verse 16 teaches us that it is “profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, [and] for training in righteousness.” God’s Word has the power to encourage us but we may not feel encouraged through absolutely every passage and reading. Some days, God’s Word will convict us of our sin and call us into action.
