Titus: God’s Timing

titusgodstiming-01

Okay, so we spent three full blogs on the first verse of Titus. We’ll be moving a tad faster from here. At a minimum, we’ll finish the greeting of Paul’s letter in today’s blog!

In His own time He has revealed His message in the proclamation that I was entrusted with by the command of God our Savior: To Titus, my true son in our common faith. Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.
Titus 1:2-4

If I could just repeat the words “in His own time” over and over in different situations I would be a more mature Christian. The problem is – I want God to work in MY own time. Well, not just God. Pretty much everyone should work on my time table – my husband, friends, family, boss, cashiers…

God is perfect therefore His timing is perfect. In this particular passage, He revealed His message (eternal life) in His own time. Paul follows suit. Rather than preach his own message, he preaches the message of God.

It is good to note that Paul views Titus as his “true son.” Paul did not have any biological children. But he in many ways adopted Titus as his own by discipling Him. This is important because this isn’t Paul as an angry customer writing a negative review to Titus. It isn’t a disgruntled fan yelling at the refs. It’s a father imparting some last words of wisdom.

Notice that Paul uses more titles than necessary. He could have written “from God and Christ Jesus.” But instead, He labels them as “God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.” Though it may not be evident at first, Paul uses these labels to emphasize His beliefs.

The same can be true today. Not everyone who refers to “Jesus” mean “Christ Jesus our Savior.” They may simply be referring to Jesus, a man who lived a long time ago.

Take time today to consider this question: are you going through the day on your time schedule or on God’s?
